Periwinkle (Vinca): The Hardy Ground Cover for Shady Spots

Periwinkle (Vinca minor and Vinca major) is one of the most reliable, time-tested ground covers for shady and partly shaded areas. With its glossy, evergreen leaves and delicate blue, violet, or white flowers from April to June, it is a valuable addition to any garden. Once established, periwinkle forms dense, weed-free carpets.

Location and Planting

Periwinkle is the perfect choice for shady to partly shaded areas under trees and shrubs, on north-facing sides, or on shaded slopes. The soil should be humus-rich, loose, and evenly moist. In overly dry spots the plant will struggle. Plant periwinkle in spring or fall, spacing plants 20โ€“25 cm (8โ€“10 in) apart for Vinca minor or 30โ€“40 cm (12โ€“16 in) for Vinca major. For quick ground coverage, plan on 6โ€“8 plants per square meter.

Care โ€” Minimal and Effective

Periwinkle is extremely low-maintenance. Water only during prolonged dry spells. A light application of compost in spring encourages growth and flowering. Pruning isn’t necessary but can be done in spring if desired โ€” simply trim the area with hedge shears or a lawn mower set to a high setting; periwinkle will reliably grow back.

Keeping Vigorous Growth in Check

Greater periwinkle (Vinca major) in particular can get out of hand over time. Use a spade to cut back any runners spreading beyond the intended area. In small gardens or alongside delicate perennials, lesser periwinkle is the better choice โ€” it is easier to control and will not overwhelm its neighbors.
