Barrenwort (Epimedium) is one of the most enchanting perennial ground covers for shady gardens. Its delicate, elf-winged flowers appear in spring, followed by attractive foliage that stays evergreen or turns color through autumn depending on the species. Few plants perform as reliably in the tricky, shaded ground beneath trees and shrubs.

The genus includes roughly 50-60 species, most native to China, Japan and the Mediterranean region, where the plant has also had a long history in traditional herbal medicine. In garden settings, though, it is valued above all for its toughness and quiet elegance.

Site and Soil

Barrenwort is the answer for dry shade under trees and shrubs, a spot where many other perennials struggle. It tolerates root competition from woody plants remarkably well and grows happily in partial to full shade — only deep, dense shade and full sun are unsuitable. The soil should be humus-rich, loose, and evenly moist to slightly dry; working in some leaf compost before planting helps it establish. Once settled in, barrenwort copes well with drought, though soggy, waterlogged soil should be avoided.

Planting and Uses

Plant in spring or autumn, spacing plants 10-12 inches (25-30 cm) apart — about eight to twelve plants per square meter for full coverage. Growth is slow but steady, and a solid carpet of foliage typically forms within two to three years. Barrenwort is ideal for underplanting trees and shrubs, along woodland edges, in shade beds, and in naturalistic woodland gardens. It also works well as planting around shaded memorial or grave sites.

Care

Barrenwort asks for very little. The single most important task is cutting back the old foliage in late winter (February or March) before new growth emerges, so the delicate spring flowers aren’t hidden beneath last year’s leaves. For deciduous varieties, a light covering of fallen leaves in autumn provides natural winter protection and feeds the soil. Fertilizing is generally unnecessary.
