Watering Plants While on Vacation: 8 Clever Irrigation Systems
No Need to Panic Before You Leave
The trip is booked, the suitcases are packed, and then it hits you: who’s going to water your beloved plant collection for the next two weeks? With the right preparation, your houseplants can survive 2-3 weeks without you just fine. Here are eight tried-and-tested methods, from simple to clever.
1. The Bathtub Method (1-3 weeks)
The classic approach: lay thick towels in the bathtub, place your plants on top, and add 2-3 cm (about an inch) of water. The towels soak it up and slowly release moisture to the plants through the drainage holes. Important: avoid direct sunlight in the bathroom, and water all plants thoroughly beforehand.
2. Plastic Bottle Watering (1-2 weeks)
The DIY solution: fill a plastic bottle with water, poke small holes in the cap or use a dedicated watering spike, then insert the bottle upside down into the soil. The water drips slowly into the substrate. A 0.5-1 liter bottle is enough per plant for 7-10 days.
3. Wick Watering (1-2 weeks)
Insert a cotton or wool string a few centimeters into the soil, with the other end hanging in a container of water. Capillary action continuously draws water into the pot. This works best with thicker string and pots that aren’t too large.
4. Water-Retaining Granules (2-4 weeks)
Special water-storing granules are worked into the soil before you leave. They swell to several times their original volume and release the water gradually. Water thoroughly once before departure β the granules will hold that moisture for weeks.
5. A Plant Sitter (a Trusted Helper)
The safest method: ask a neighbor, friend, or family member to stop by once or twice a week. Group your plants together, label them with watering instructions, and leave behind a full watering can of room-temperature water.
6. Move Plants to a Shadier Spot
Not a watering method as such, but extremely effective: move plants away from sunny windowsills into a cooler, shadier room. Less light means less evaporation and lower water needs. In a bathroom or kitchen without direct sun, most plants can last roughly twice as long.
7. Automatic Watering Systems
A watering can with a long spout makes it easy to water each plant thoroughly and precisely right before you leave. For automated watering, there are also practical systems available: a pressure sprayer can be repurposed as a reservoir for a drip system, and a soil moisture meter lets you check each plant’s moisture level before departure to know exactly how much water it needs.
