Vacation Watering: How Your Plants Survive While You’re Away

A week or two away doesn’t have to mean coming home to wilted leaves and crispy soil. Most houseplants can comfortably handle a short absence with a little preparation β€” the key is reducing their water demand and increasing the water supply available to them at the same time.

Group Plants Together

Clustering plants in one spot, away from direct sun and heating or cooling vents, raises the humidity around their leaves through collective transpiration and slows how quickly the potting mix dries out. A bathroom, or any cooler room with indirect light, works well. Moving plants out of hot, sunny windowsills for the duration of the trip alone can cut water loss significantly, since heat and direct light are the biggest drivers of evaporation from soil and leaves.

The Bathtub Method

For trips of a week or so, lay a folded towel or bath mat in the bottom of a bathtub, soak it thoroughly, and set your plants on top (pots without saucers work best, or remove saucers so excess water can drain). The damp towel keeps humidity high and gives plants a moisture source to draw from if the mix dries out, without leaving pots sitting directly in standing water, which risks root rot. Keep the room dim but not pitch dark, and re-wet the towel before leaving if the trip is closer to two weeks.

Capillary Mats

A capillary mat is a thick, absorbent fabric laid on a tray or counter with one edge in a shallow reservoir of water. Pots sit on top and draw moisture upward through their drainage holes as needed, similar to the bathtub method but more controlled and reusable. This works especially well for plants in plastic nursery pots with good drainage contact, and can sustain a decent-sized group of plants for two to three weeks with a large enough reservoir.

Water Globes and Slow-Release Devices

Glass water globes or ceramic watering spikes release water gradually into the soil as it dries, based on air pressure and soil moisture rather than a timer. They work reasonably well for a single pot but are less reliable for larger containers or plants with heavy water demand, since the release rate is fixed and can’t adjust to a hot, dry week versus a mild one. They’re best treated as a supplement for a handful of plants rather than a whole-collection solution, and are worth testing a few days before you leave to see how quickly each one empties.

Ask a Sitter

For trips longer than two weeks, or for plants with specific needs (orchids, cacti that shouldn’t be overwatered, or anything recently repotted), nothing beats a person checking in. Leave clear, written instructions with exact watering amounts and frequency rather than “water if dry,” since that judgment call is harder for someone unfamiliar with your plants. A quick photo reference of what each plant looks like when it needs water helps a lot.

Before You Leave

  • Water thoroughly the day before departure so plants start the trip fully hydrated.
  • Move plants out of direct sun and away from drafts or heating vents.
  • Trim any flowers or overly lush growth, which increases water demand through transpiration.
  • Skip fertilizing right before a trip β€” it does nothing for drought tolerance and can stress roots in drying soil.

Combining two of these methods β€” grouping plants in a humid room plus a capillary mat or water globes β€” covers most gaps in a single system’s weaknesses and gives a solid buffer for trips up to two or three weeks.
