Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata): The Blooming Carpet for the Spring Garden

Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata), also known as moss phlox, is one of the most rewarding and colorful ground covers for sunny locations. From April to June, it transforms rock gardens, wall tops, and bed edges into a brilliant carpet of blooms in white, pink, red, blue, or violet. Even outside its flowering season, it impresses with its dense, evergreen cushion of needle-like leaves.
The Loveliest Varieties
| Variety | Flower Color | Height | Special Feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phlox subulata ‘Emerald Cushion Blue’ | Light blue | 10 cm | Very free-flowering |
| Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’ | Bright red | 10 cm | Most intense color |
| Phlox subulata ‘Maischnee’ | Pure white | 10 cm | Elegant and refined |
| Phlox subulata ‘Purple Beauty’ | Deep violet | 12 cm | Darkest variety |
Location and Planting
Creeping phlox needs full sun โ the more, the better. Only in a fully sunny spot will it bloom truly abundantly. The soil should be well-drained, sandy-gravelly, and rather low in nutrients. Heavy, damp soils lead to root rot and are unsuitable. Rock gardens, sunny slopes, and dry wall tops are ideal.
Plant creeping phlox in spring, spacing plants 25-30 cm apart. About 12 plants per square meter will give quick ground coverage. Loosen the soil before planting, and work in sand or grit if the soil is heavy. Water thoroughly after planting.
Minimal Care
Creeping phlox is extremely low-maintenance. Watering is only needed during extreme drought. Fertilize very sparingly โ a small application of compost in spring is enough. Too much nitrogen leads to soft growth and reduced flowering. After flowering, you can trim the cushions back by about a third with hedge shears. This encourages compact growth and prevents the plant from becoming bare in the center.
