Good potting soil is the foundation for healthy, thriving plants. But quality varies enormously across the market: while high-quality soil offers a loose structure, balanced nutrients, and living soil biology, cheap products are often made from inferior components that compact quickly and become a burden for plants. Knowing what to look for saves both frustration and money.
Here’s a simple test: open a bag of soil and reach in. Good potting soil feels loose, crumbly, and slightly moist, with a pleasant, forest-floor smell. Poor-quality soil is lumpy, smells musty or, worse, rotten, and often contains coarse wood chips, bits of plastic, or stones. The pH should fall between 5.5 and 6.5, and this should be stated on the packaging.
One important indicator of good structure is clay content: a high-quality substrate contains clay minerals or lava grit that store water and nutrients and release them to plants as needed. Perlite (volcanic glass) also loosens the structure and improves aeration. Peat-free soils, which should be the standard today, use alternative materials such as coconut coir, wood fiber, composted bark, and compost. They’re biodegradable and better for the climate, but dry out faster and need more frequent feeding.
Look for quality seals such as recognized standards for growing media or organic certifications. These guarantee tested ingredients, defined nutrient levels, and freedom from contaminants. Pre-fertilized soil with a slow-release fertilizer feeds plants for six to eight weeks before it needs topping up.
