Creeping Phlox (Phlox subulata): The Blooming Carpet for Rock Gardens and Borders
Creeping phlox (Phlox subulata), also known as moss phlox, is one of the most rewarding and colorful ground covers for sunny sites. From April to June, it transforms rock gardens, wall tops, and border edges into a brilliant carpet of white, pink, red, blue, or violet blooms. Even outside of flowering season, it impresses with its dense, evergreen cushion of needle-like leaves.

Location and Planting
Creeping phlox needs full sun โ the more, the better. It only flowers truly abundantly in a fully sunny spot. The soil should be well-drained, sandy or gravelly, and relatively poor in nutrients. Heavy, damp soil leads to root rot and is unsuitable. Rock gardens, sunny slopes, and dry wall tops are ideal locations.
Plant creeping phlox in spring, spacing plants 25-30 cm (10-12 inches) apart. About 12 plants per square meter will give quick, full coverage. Loosen the soil before planting and work in sand or grit if the soil is heavy. Water well after planting.
Minimal Care
Creeping phlox is extremely low-maintenance. Watering is only needed during extreme drought. Fertilize very sparingly โ a small amount of compost in spring is enough. Too much nitrogen leads to soft growth and reduced flowering. After flowering, you can trim the cushions back by about a third with hedge shears. This encourages compact growth and prevents the plant from becoming bare in the center.
