Do Houseplants Really Need Fertilizer?

Fertilizer provides the mineral nutrients that plants need as raw materials for building proteins, enzymes, chlorophyll, and every other structure in their bodies. Think of it as a vitamin and mineral supplement, not a meal.

Understanding NPK: The Big Three

Every fertilizer label displays three numbers separated by hyphens, such as 10-10-10 or 3-1-2. These three are called macronutrients because plants need them in relatively large quantities.

Nitrogen (N) – The Greening Nutrient

Nitrogen is the primary component of chlorophyll, the molecule that makes leaves green and performs photosynthesis. It is also a building block of amino acids, the foundation of all proteins. A nitrogen-deficient plant produces pale, yellowing leaves, particularly older ones, and overall growth is stunted.
