The Golden Rule: Less Is More
The dosing instructions on a fertilizer bottle are just guidelines, and they’re often set at the upper end of what’s actually needed. Start with half the recommended dose and watch how your plant responds. Nutrient needs drop dramatically during the low-light winter months especially.
Signs of Overfertilizing
- White crusts on the surface of the soil — crystallized fertilizer salts
- Brown, wilted leaf tips despite moist soil
- Burned roots: root tips turn black and die off
- Sudden leaf drop or wilting shoots
- The plant grows vigorously, but the shoots are soft and leggy
First Aid for Overfertilized Plants
If you suspect you’ve overfed a plant, flush the soil thoroughly right away. Place the pot in the bathtub or under the tap and run clear, room-temperature water through the soil several times to wash out the excess salts. For severely damaged plants, repotting into fresh soil is often the only thing that helps.
When Should You Skip Fertilizing Altogether?
Skip fertilizer entirely in the following situations: freshly repotted plants (the new soil already contains enough nutrients for 4–6 weeks), sick or pest-infested plants, during winter dormancy (November through February), and during drought stress or extreme heat.
A simple measuring cup or dosing aid for liquid fertilizer makes it much easier to get the amount right every time, helping you avoid costly and frustrating overfertilizing mistakes.
